Consultant-Led Private Maternity Care with Dr Keith Duncan MD FRCOG
Dr Duncan would be delighted to care for you and guide you throughout your pregnancy - from your first appointment, through every scan, and to the delivery of your baby at The Portland Hospital, the UK's only private hospital dedicated to women and children. From beginning to end, you are looked after by one named consultant who knows you and your pregnancy.
Whether this is your first baby or another addition to your family, your care is built around you: your history, your preferences, and the kind of birth experience you hope for. Dr Duncan is dedicated to providing a safe, comfortable and positive experience of pregnancy and childbirth, and will do all he can to ensure you are looked after in the best way possible.
Why The Portland Hospital?
Dr Duncan delivers exclusively at The Portland Hospital, and is proud to do so. Its maternity and neonatal outcomes speak to a standard of safety and clinical excellence that consistently exceeds the national average.
In its most recent published figures (1st April 2024 – 31st March 2025, covering 1,545 deliveries), The Portland Hospital reported:
- A 3rd and 4th degree tear rate of fewer than 1.3 per 1,000 births, against a national average of 30 per 1,000.
- A surgical site infection rate of 1–2%, compared with 5–15% nationally.
- A major post-partum haemorrhage rate (blood loss) greater than 1,500mls of 1.4%, against a national average of 3.1%.
- 86% of babies receiving breastmilk for their first feed, compared with 72% nationally
- 72% enjoying skin-to-skin contact in the first hour after birth, against 61%.
Behind these numbers is a hospital built around mother and baby: one-to-one midwifery care for every mother in labour, a 24/7 on-site consultant anaesthetist, a 24/7 obstetric doctor on call, a dedicated obstetric emergency theatre, and a level 2 neonatal unit. You can read The Portland Hospital's full maternity outcomes report here.

Your care journey with Dr Duncan
From your first appointment to the moment you meet your baby, your pregnancy unfolds over three trimesters - and Dr Duncan is with you at each stage. In the early weeks, care focuses on confirming and dating your pregnancy and the first viability and reassurance scans. Through the middle of pregnancy, appointments track your baby's growth and development, with the key milestone scans along the way - the nuchal scan, the anomaly scan, and growth and doppler scans. As you move into the final weeks, visits become more frequent and attention turns to planning your birth and preparing for delivery.
You'll initially be seen on a monthly basis, then more frequently as your delivery date nears, and if your pregnancy needs closer monitoring, the additional visits are included in every package at no extra charge. As a Fetal Medicine Specialist, Dr Duncan performs a scan himself at each and every appointment, so your baby's progress is closely monitored throughout - you can read more about the full range of scans on our ultrasound scans page.
What sets Dr Duncan's care apart is continuity and access: he sees you personally at every visit, so nothing about your pregnancy is handed between different clinicians, and every patient is given his personal mobile number with 24hr access for support throughout. More detail on what each package includes is set out on the fees page.
To follow what's happening for you and your baby at each stage, explore Dr Duncan's guide, What Happens Week By Week In My Pregnancy?, and his video series with Unii on the essentials of childbirth, viewable here.
Specialist Care Pathways
Every pregnancy is different, and some need particular expertise. As a sub-specialist in Maternal and Fetal Medicine, Dr Duncan personally manages complex and higher-risk pregnancies that benefit from closer monitoring and precise planning — and wherever your pregnancy needs additional visits or scans, these are included in your package at no extra charge. Whatever your circumstances, Dr Duncan provides specialist care across:
Caesarean Sections
Twin & Multiple Pregnancy Care
High-Risk Pregnancy Care
Miscarriage Care & Treatment

Private Maternity Care FAQs
Many patients get in touch between 6 and 10 weeks of pregnancy. Starting early ensures availability and allows time to plan your scans, screening and blood tests from the outset - but Dr Duncan offers packages beginning at 6, 12, 20, 30 and 35 weeks, so you're welcome to join his care at whatever stage of pregnancy you're at.
Under Dr Duncan you have one named consultant from your first appointment through to delivery and beyond - the same consultant at every visit, performing your scans himself and attending your birth, rather than a rotation of different clinicians. You also have his personal mobile number for 24hr access throughout your pregnancy, and delivery at The Portland Hospital.
Yes. Dr Duncan is a sub-specialist in Maternal and Fetal Medicine with over 30 years' experience caring for high-risk pregnancies and twin and multiple pregnancies. Your package covers Dr Duncan's consultant fees - antenatal care, scans, delivery and postnatal care.
